What is a primer?
A makeup primer is a base product that is placed on the skin before you apply your foundation.
What does a primer do?
A primer has multiple uses and depending on your skin type you would choose a primer to suit both that & your needs.
Generally a primer is used to create a barrier between your skin and your makeup, giving your makeup something to hold onto & making your foundation last longer. A primer helps to prepare your skin for foundation application, making it smoother and evens out skin tone. Primers can smooth out fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, it can help colour correct redness, rosacea and conceal spots.
How to apply a primer
- Use them after you apply your moisturizer, allowing at least 5 minutes for the moisturizer to settle into the skin.
- Using a pea size amount of the primer and apply gently to the skin, paying attention to the under eye area. This will allow any under eye concealer to glide on smoothly.
- Then apply your concealer, foundation, or face powder as you normally would
I apply a primer with either my fingers on my own face or else a small stipple brush with clients.
Which primer should you be using?
Depending on what skin type you are and what your requirements are you would choose a primer that is best suited to your skin.
Here are my favourite primers and who can use them:
All Skin Types
Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Primer
This mineral based primer is suitable for all skin types. It is a clear, colourless primer that will even out the skin, reducing signs of fine lines, wrinkles and large pores. It has a lightweight silky formula and its packed with vitamins and minerals.
Suitable for: All Skin Types & Sensitive Skin Types
Smashbox Original Photo Finish Primer
The Smashbox primers are my favourite primers ever. There are 10 in the entire range varying from the original primer right up to colour correcting primers and radiance primers, there is something to suit all skin types & concerns.
The one I mainly use is the Original Photo Finish Primer. This award winning primer is Oil Free, contains Vitamin A&E to combat anti-aging, its excellent for anyone with oily skin or large pores as it mattifies the skin while reducing the visibility of large pores. As it contains Green Tea & Grape Seed extract its really hydrating on the skin also.
Suitable for: All Skin Types
Buff Makeup Camera Ready Primer
I have been using this primer for over 3 years now and its an ultimate favourite of mine. Its super luxurious and its silky texture smoothes the skin & leaves a flawless finish, minimizes the appearance of fine lines and large pores. Its luxurious enough for dryer skin types and oil free so its suitable for oily skin types.
Suitable for: All Skin Types
Normal to Dry Skin Types (including mature skin types)
Laura Mercier Radiance Primer
This foundation primer is a creamy gel with a golden/pearl tint which leaves a radiant finish minising the look of imperfections but leaving a beautiful glow to the skin. It does leave a golden tint to the skin so try a tester to make sure it suits your skin tone before buying. This primer contains Vitamins A, C & E which will help combat against any harmful antioxidants and will reduce aging.
Suitable for: Normal to Dry Skin Types
Clarins Beauty Flash Balm
This is amazing to use as a primer for dry-skin or areas of dryness but it’s also the ultimate pick-me-up for tired skin. Beauty Flash Balm is an instant skin radiating booster that eliminates signs of fatigue, instantly moisturises, brightens and tightens. It also smells devine! You need to leave Beauty Flash Balm on the skin for 5 minutes before applying foundation. You can also use Beauty Flash Balm as a mask on days where you need an extra boost.
Suitable for: Dry/Very Dry Skin & Mature Skin
Mac Cosmetics Prep + Prime Moisture Infusion
Mac Primers were never my favourite, until this beauty came on the scene, The Moisture Infusion is so lightweight, it’s a serum that saturates the skin with a concentrated boost of hydration, making it a unique hybrid between skincare and priming. It almost acts as a moisturiser/primer combination.
Suitable for: Dry to Very Dry Skin types
Oily Skin Types
This bestselling primer is completely devoted to making large pores look less noticeable. This oil free primer is amazing for all ages and skin types. Its skin colour means that it can be worn on its own without makeup being applied over it. This primer is more so known as being a balm that contains Vitamin E to protect the skin from free radicals. It leaves the skin looking pore-less and flawless and can be re=applied over foundation if the pesky pores start creeping through throughout the day.
Suitable For: Oily Skin, Large Pores & Mature Skin Types.
Revlon Photo Ready Prime & Anti Shine
This primer has a cake like texture but it isn’t hard, it kind of feels like the soft icing on a cupcake. It comes with an application sponge that I would recommend using rather than a brush or your fingers.
This multi-use balm can be worn alone if you’re having a no-makeup day after your cleanse, tone and moisturise ritual. Or use it under makeup to prime, smooth skin and eliminate shine.
Suitable for: Oily to Combination Skin Types
Time Balm by The Balm Cosmetics
TimeBalm is quite similar to the Revlon Photo Ready & is packed with Vitamins A, C & E , this primer also designed to be worn alone for visibly softer skin.
TimeBalm too has a thick cake-like, powdered-gel formula that evens out skin-tone, minimises the appearance of fine lines and pores and creates a perfect layer between the skin and the foundation.
